I thought this was a great western with really nice scenery and decent acting by all involved. I'm a bit puzzled over one issue: why did the script repeatedly imply that the setting is in the US (Montana?) when there is no effort to disguise where much of the movie was actually shot? It was refreshing to see "Canmore" on several signs throughout the moviebut Canmore is in Alberta, Canada, not the US. Also, most of the spectacular scenery is in the Banff/Jasper parks area of Canada. Having been there, I know how close to the US border this part of Canada is, but why can't we give the Canadians credit for what is theirs? Part of the movie was shot in Mexico, but that isn't obvious from watching it like the Canadian scenery is.
I admit this issue does not detract from the artistic value of the movie, but it does puzzle me a bit.

yea, they shot this movie around Banff, but i was wondering which parts were shot in mexico. They shoot zillions of movies(and tv stuff) in BC that are set in other places. This time i guess they just didnt pay much attention to changing signs or anything, because years ago when i first saw this movie i could see it wasnt filmed in the Oxbow area,I,m from western Montana and have hiked, and photo,d most of it.I always like this movie though, watching it again for probly the 10th time or so,lol.I always thought they must have shot it in the Bob Marshall, especially the scenes where he,s leading barb hershey into the mountains and they almost fall off the mountain, but, alas, its in Canada, identical country though.

We have watched this movie several times on amc and on other networks and it never ceases to enchant us, beautifully filmed and skillfully written, its one of those classics that should be enjoyed for years to come. One note, ZIP steals some of the scenes, a really sweet dog!!!

Because this story is about the Cheyenne Native Americans which were based in the Montana Region.
They film in Canada because its cheaper! Non American Unions and more undisturbed lands.
Most your TV shows these days are filmed in Vancouver B.C. for that very reason.

Lots of movies that are set in the US are shot in Canada. The continuity error you mentioned (the Canmore, Canada signs) are just thatan error. No big deal, really. That little thing doesn't take anything away from the movie, in my opinion. I just go on and suspend my disbelief and enjoy the show. Too much analysis spoils it.
