the reason why is his range. he has such depth diversity in the vast kinds of roles he is great at. now cruise no matter what role he plays intense roles or more meek, quiet roles he always is in complete control, he has total confidence in himself and his abilities in life. he's never vulnerable or has a weakness of his confidence. that is a weakness of his range. whereas depp plays vulnerable greatly and just as well as he plays a confident alpha male character.
he plays a vulnerable, afraid, and insecure in his situation person in this film.

Depends upon the role. If Cruise were called to the witness stand to appear like something other than a former heartthrob who's destroyed his mind and body via decades of substance abuse, i'm pretty sure he'd put forth a far more credible performance than Depp did
