To the one above me, yeah I believe the Grasshopper was suppose to been a sign of evil or an omen if you will of up and coming doom.
To the Original poster: If you remember the scene were Jane and Rosa Nook tell Grace and Donald about Joshia's past and the fact that his mother, (which I think was Rosa) gave him up, because it was a sin for a young girl, to have a child back in the day. Then the ladies tell them that Joshia was looking for a like child, (one who was lied to and left behind by their mother) and once he has that like child, then he would come and lead the children. The like child in question was Margret, because she was Grace's daughter and not her sister, like we thought for most of the movie.
So, Joshia, the ghost boy wanted to get rid of Margret or have her take his placae so he could rise up and lead the children.

Hi there
It's been a while since I saw the movie, but didn't grasshoppers usually appear before/while people were killed? And we were supposed to think in the end that, oh no, they haven't gotten rid of the evil/danger/devil/whatever he/it is coming after them again! But the movie ends there if I remember correctly. As for the barn, I am not sure. Wasn't there a lot of "barn action" in this movie?
