I am not sure if it's mentioned in the movie, but how did these guys get to work together? They obviously hate each other. Shep Proudfoot states he doesn't know who Showalter is so it's probably not he who brought these two criminals together.
Not sure if it's mentioned eitherbut what is Showalter doing in the Midwest? He obviously is a New Yorker, who has no previous experience with the Minnesota culture. He sticks out like a sore thumb!

I think it's fairly clear that Carl and Gaear met when they performed together as Benny and Bjorn in a badly reviewed dinner theater version of "Mamma Mia" (staged at Sven's Casa Bella Italian Restaurant off I-94 in Muskoda, N.D.). They bonded over their shared love of Swedish pop, but the relationship devolved eventually, and the show closed, because of irreconcible stylistic differences over the choreography for "Dancing Queen". By the time we meet them, they are obviously at a bad crossroads in their relationship, and no longer on speaking terms.
I trust that gives you some insight into their backstory.

The relationship between Carl, Gaear and Shep is never explained in the film other than Shep stating he wouldn't "vouch" for Carl. This is pure speculation on my part but it's possible Gaear and Shep knew each other from prison. Shep relays Jerry's harebrained scheme to Gaear who enlists a fellow thug (Carl) to be his accomplice. Again, pure speculation other than what we know about Jerry using Shep to set up the nighttime tavern meet.
He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
