Like any other pseudo-contemporary adaptation of
Romeo and Juliet
, I knew this movie might suck. But because Leo DiCaprio was in it, I thought what the heck, I'm gonna watch this! He didn't disappoint, of course, but the film itself is disappointing in its whole. It feels so overdone and unnecessary at times, you might be better off telling yourself this was not inspired by Shakespeare. The first conflict scene was utter ridiculous and stereotypical, I didn't understand the choice for a black actor to play Mercutio, and the involvement of cosplay and drugs (
or whatever pill Romeo took from Mercutio before the Capulet party
) seemed quite inappropriate and weird.
Despite all these, I thought the soundtrack was splendid and it captured the essence of the late 90s, when Radiohead were good and famous, and so was DiCaprio. Which takes me to the second aspect that I loooooved about this film: young, beautiful, fresh-faced Leo DiCaprio. I reckon they made some really inspired choices when selecting soundtrack songs for Romeo's scenes, because Romeo's introductory scene, the fish tank scene, and the marrying scene not only have beautiful visuals, but also beautiful music which made them iconic.
I wish I could go back to those times - to the 90s when times and entertainment were a lot better than today, then I remember that I was born in the 90s and have a craving for an age I did not get to enjoy for I was merely a little child.
