Maybe because it was set in Maine, and maybe because everybody in the film sported that heavy Bahston accent, or maybe just because it seemed like a movie about redemption and prison; I just felt like Stephen King could've done a wonderful adaptation of this screenplay. This is not to take anything away from the man who did it; I found the film to be wondefully touching.

The film may have been filmed in Vermont, but it was still definitely set in Maine. And as for screenplay adaptation? The director wrote this himself, it wasn't an adaptation, so how could Stephen King have done it better? And to someone in IL, the Boston accent does have a similarity to what was used in the movie.
P.S. If you like this movie, there is a wonderful musical for the stage based on it (though they significantly changed the ending as you might expect from a musical). But it is still amazing.

That wasn't a Boston accentnot by a long shot.
This is a logic free zone:
Use of logic will be met with uncomfortable silences
