Steady. When I said that what I meant was 'as portrayed in the movie.' I am just as irritated at this portrayal as you are (maybe). All I meant was
despite
this I enjoyed the movie, because the men were not central to the movieit was all about the women. Having said that, there is obviously a negative portayal of men in media. Try to find one positive role model for every 10 bad ones on televisionI know you can't.

This is a
little
more than unfair. If you're going to make that statement, then that means I can just go ahead and say "most women are conceited" off the fly. What can I say? I'm a big movie watcher, both foreign and domestic. I'm always interested in seeing and examining the relationships of men and women on screen, and I'd say 7 times out of 10 men are portrayed the way they are in Spitfire Grill (in American cinema, anyway).
And when we do get a positive male character, he is usually a whimp or you just feel sorry for him (listen to Vince Vaughn in Swingers). But hey, women do not normally respect or are interested in men who are "sensitive" or "attentive" anyway, so I guess it makes total sense. The reason why we (both men and women) believe that "most men are jerks" is becasue they're the ones that get the most attention (even in Spitfire Grill, the one "good" guy comes up empty). I've known plenty of women in my years that only fit in the jerk department, but were alos just down-right nasty and would go out of their way to make other people unhappy if she was seriously judgmental femme fatales. But I don't stereotype
all
or even
most
women by those few bad experiences I've had. But then again, I'm not a jerk.
What have we seen more of in American cinema? The guys in Spitfire Grill or Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction? Women aren't usually
allowed
to be the "bad guys". It's not "believable". They
have to
be the victims or the ingenues. They can't commit crimes (without a really good reason) without losing respect or likeability. Men, well, I haven't seen too many movies featuring "a pimp with a heart of gold". But Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman is the norm when it comes to prostitutes. Normally, women over 40 aren't allowed to be "sexy" or have romances with younger men (unless it's a comedy). There are so many movies that could be made that address these other stereotypes, but instead we usually get half a dozen movies a year with characters like those in Spitfire Grill and I'm just getting tired of seeing them (but I still do just in the hopes I will be proved wrong someday).

Spitefire Grill played too much like a Lifetime Channel movie (the men are bad/idiots/rapists/woman-beaters and the women are victims).
It's taken me three days to reply and I'm still not sure what I want to say. This movie is definitely told from a female perspective, and most guys are jerks. The odd thing is this did not "put me off" of this movie (I'm a guy).
While I suppose I agree with you, it seems like an irrelevant point. The force of this movie is the strength (and discovered strength) of the female characters.

I can agree with that, never thought about it before you mentioned it. However, I didn't care for Chocolat. I loved this film, one of my favorites. I actually like Alison Elliot in The Etneral as well. I think she is a good actress with much talent from what I have seen. I am surprised she is not more well known and has not been in more well known films.
