Which episodes do you rank as the greatest episodes and why?
for me 5) Fair Enough- Daria and Jane's reaction to Stacy's boyfriend trouble is spot on. Also the food fight/ riot in the theatre is rediculous. I also love the pay off that the episode has Ms Li's manipulative scheme turns into a violent mess while Daria and Jane the misanthropic outcasts are forced to take on a position of authority at the information booth and actually are a hit with the kids.
4) Jake of Hearts- Having a serious issue like a heart attack on a comedy show is one thing but it's a really good insight into Jake's character and the moment when Daria confronts those annoying radio dj's live on radio is the epitome of Daria epicness.
3) Lucky Strike- it's just a great episode overall. You have trent and mr o neil which is a brilliantly strange combination you have mr de martino using his repressed rage sucessfully and you have the relationship between Daria and Quinn coming full circle with her actually admitting Daria is her sister.
2) Art n Crass- the tug of war between Daria and Jane vs the school is hilarious and is IMO the best Helen moment of the series when she calls out Ms Li on the phone

Tie between Boxing Daria and Write Where It Hurts. Both are really good examples of getting into Daria's head. Boxing Daria which I think is one of the greatest examples of intelligent, emotional yet still witty comedy is perhaps the best insight we get into Daria's alienation and the truth behind her feelings behind being an outcast. It's a great step away from the usial format of the show where Daria and Jane are being bored/annoyed by the stupidity of Lawndale High and is almost like a character study.
And Write Where It Hurts has some of the greatest parodies/tributes to classic literature and films but again it ranks as my top episode not just because of the humour butthe pay off at the end. I love the Daria's final story and what it shows about her as a character and the relationship with her family. It's sweet but it never loses it's edge.
So yeah that's mine what about you guys?
beauty
freedom
love
truth

My Night at Daria's-
Only a show of this magnitude could discuss sex in such a mature and straightforward fashion, never telling you that you must either whore yourself around for social credit or physically abstain until marriage or whenever. It walks a fine line and lets the story tell itself. Daria took much thought into how she felt about contact and intimacy and made her decision accordingly, a moral that should be tackled more often (and properly, like in this episode) in shows aimed towards an older audience.

The Lost Girls-
Alongside "Malled," this episode expertly targeted the issues with focus groups and artificial popularity. Daria absolutely crushes MTV (amongst other things) when asked what the word "edgy" means. Absolutely hilarious and eye-opening to say the least. A must-watch for teenagers.

Arts N' Crass-
I have gone through almost exactly what happened with Jane in that my school had tried to censor artwork that had an unpleasant message for the benefit of the student body. Helen's brutal legal takedown of Mrs. Li is among the most satisfying moments in the show. All-in-all, one of the funniest and most honest episodes.

Through A Lens Darkly-
One of the earliest shining examples of Daria's surfacing humanity, which she had been trying to avoid almost entirely up to this point (aside from the obvious "Pierce Me"). Brittany's "human speech" at the end is possibly her most significant moment as a character, enough to make Daria feel better and less conscious about herself once more. Added bonus for the episode revolving around contacts, making it incredibly relatable.

Boxing Daria-
Words cannot express how I feel about this episode. Not only is it undoubtedly my favorite episode of the show, but probably my favorite episode of any TV show I've seen in my life. As an individual with Aspergers, I have always been COMPLETELY different from just about everybody I've ever known. My parents would argue over how different and difficult I was when I was young, and it was something that would occasionally persist through the years, because no matter how hard they tried, it wouldn't work out. "Boxing Daria" was heartbreaking in all the right ways. I curled into a ball and started to cry the first time I saw it, not necessarily from sadness, but overwhelming joy and realization that I was equally difficult to my parents and peers. It felt as though the episode was created specifically for my viewing, it was so relatable.
This show got me, had been with me the entire time I was watching it, and always would be. It changed my perspective and life.
Honorable Mentions:
Monster-
Thoroughly entertaining not as much to see a day in the life of Quinn, but to watch Daria and Jane brave following Quinn around. Brittany cocking her head in clueless irony while watching the finished documentary is one of my favorite moments in the whole show.
The Daria Hunter-
We needed an episode loaded with references to "Platoon," "Apocalypse Now," "The Deer Hunter," and others. Hilarious episode. Personal favorite Mr. DiMartino appearance, also showed that Brittany is more than meets the eye.
That Was Then, This Is Dumb-
Frank Zappa acknowledgement. Enough said. Plus, the hippie sideplot I found immensely amusing.
The Old And Beautiful-
"WHAT SQUEAK?"
Fizz Ed-
A principal trying way too hard to raise money for the school is no exaggeration where I'm from. Hilarious to watch Lawndale High's favorite soda turn on the one's who loved it most.
In all honesty, just about every episode aside from "Depth Takes A Holiday" would be in my honorable mentions (a weak episode, but not what I would call "horrible").

"Ill - Daria's rash and I like how everybody shows up at the hospital to see her. I think she had more friends than she realized."
Bingo. That's what I loved about it. Even though Kevin and Brittany are people many can only deal with in small doses, and of course they said some rude things to Daria (without understanding why what they said was rude), I always thought they, in their own way, actually liked Daria and always seemed happy to see her and Janeagain in their own way. There were some moments I actually felt bad for Kevin and Brittany just because Daria and Jane said some really mean things to them, but of course it sort of went over their head. Sometimes it resulted in harm (like when Kevin bought that motorcycle jacket and Brittany and Kevin were excited to show it off to Jane and Daria only to have them make fun of him and goad Kevin into buying a motorcycle (motorbike) that he had no business in riding). I appreciated that Brittany tried to keep Daria's rash a secret and enjoyed having to share a secret with Dariaas much as she could keep it to herself.

I really like Helen and Jake. They try to be good parents. They are flawed but loving and supportive in their ways. They look even better when you compare them to Jane's absentee parents and Jodi's who are so driven they never think of Jodi as an individual or consider her feelings.

Not in any particular order, my favorite five episodes are:
1.) " Quinn the Brain"- I like this episode because I think it was humorous how Quinn was getting praised for this terrible poem she wrote. Although it is shallow, my favorite part was the ending where we got to see Daria without the glasses and baggy clothes; to me, it showed that Daria was attractive, and if she put in a bit of effort, could probably be just as pretty as Quinn. As a viewer, I was very interested to see what Daria would look like without the atrocious glasses and horrendous clothing.
2.) " Boxing Daria"- This is probably my favorite episode. I loved learning a bit about Daria's childhood, and understanding why she was the way she was. I really sympathized with Daria in that episode; she was just so alone. No one understood or accepted her. Finally, I enjoyed watching Daria grow as a person, and realize that she was a difficult child to raise, and her parents deserve her gratitude for always standing by her. In the end, Daria realized that, although her mother and father had many flaws, they were good parents who truly loved her, and tried their best to understand and accept who she was, no matter how hard that was at times.
3.) " Ill"- Why this episode is one of my favorites, I have no idea, but it is.
4.) " Dye! Dye! My Darling"- I know many people disliked this episode because of what Daria did to Jane, but I enjoyed it. This episode showed that Daria was human and makes stupid mistakes just like everyone else, no matter how intelligent or dumb. I like how we got to see Daria as a semi regular teenage girl who liked a guy, and because of that, let her hormones get the best of her. I know I am in the minority here, but I really liked Tom. I thought they made a good couple, and had quite a bit in common; I wish they stayed together, no matter how unrealistic that would have been. I felt Tom was good for Daria; he helped Daria loosen up a bit, and the relationship gave Daria the experience
she needed to grow as a person. It was interesting to see Daria have a boyfriend because it was so different for her, and it forced her out of her comfort zone. Also, I felt Tom understood genuinely liked, and understood Daria.
5.) " Jake of Hearts"- I like this episode because Jake's mother is introduced, and we learn a bit about Jake's unstable childhood. When he had his heart attack, it was nice to see the family's reaction; it showed how much they love Jake. In many of the episodes, his feelings and concerns are ignored, and sometimes Jake is just treated badly by his family, mainly Helen.

In no particular order
Arts N Crass - This is one I remember so well from back in the day.
See Jane Run - Another one that always sticks out to me.
Pierce Me - So freaking cute! Trent lays it on so thick and Daria is so cute blushing. At the piercing parlor Trent hold out his hand (Daria: What's that? Trent: That's my hand, Daria. Gimme yours") LOL!
Ill - Daria's rash and I like how everybody shows up at the hospital to see her. I think she had more friends than she realized.
Fat Like Me - Quinn sticking by Sandi.
Also, really like Speedtrapped and Legends of the Mall.

Boxing Daria

Write Where It Hurts

Dye! Dye! My Darling (a controversial choice I'm sure, but it was the episode that got me hooked)

Fire

Through A Lens Darkly
To me, Boxing Daria is not just the best episode of the series, it's one of the best episodes of any show, animated or live-action. As someone who is mildly autistic, it felt very close to home, especially the scene with Daria as a child and the inkblot tests. That feeling of being misunderstood is something I think we all go through at some point in our lives, but for people with autism or other disabilities, I think it rings especially true. It was a great moment in TV, especially for animation, as it showed a depth that you don't often see in the genre (except maybe Pixar movies).

Misery Chick - Mainly coming from some personal experience. I was sort of the school's "misery chick", and I'm sure if I was attending school in my senior year when we lost two students that I would have been in Daria's shoes; being unpopular but being asked how I deal with being "miserable" and "gloomy".

Write Where It Hurts - Reasons you said.

Arts n' Crass - I love that we do see Helen get involved with something in Daria's life instead of having someone else do it, and the conversation between her and Ms. Li was perfection.

Daria! - It was just an all-around fun episode that was a way for the show to cut loose. This and I'm a sucker for musical themed episodes of shows.

Boxing Daria - For a way to close the show, it was dark and an interesting way to see into Daria's head (as you said). And I've never seen a more relatable episode of the show until then and it was nice to see a somewhat serious episode of the show.

Honestly I like all of them but

Arts n Crass

Pierce me

Quinn the Brain
Those 3 are classics no doubt, picking a 4 and 5 were harder. Notice the top 3 were all from season 2.

See Jane Run

Road Warrior
Honorable mentions: Lane Miserables, Daria!, It Happened One Nut. and Fat Like Me.
Worst: Depth Takes a Holiday, Too Cute, and Antisocial Climbers

I think my favorites are a bit unconventional, but they are:

The Teachings of Don Jake - This is the Daria episode which I loved as a kid. It is definitely the first episode I always think of when I think Daria. I just find the whole episode so funny from the camping trip gone wrong to the Lane family reunion.

See Jane Run - Jane is my favorite character, so I usually enjoy Jane episodes. This is probably my favorite Jane episode, because it shows her excelling at something other than art. Great Jane-centric episode.

Pierce Me - Sooooo hilariously cute.Daria's whole crush on Trent. It's just so hard not to enjoy these Daria crushing on Trent episodes, because they provide such comedy and normality to Daria, and you kind of remember that she is indeed like any other teenage girl, crushing on the "cool" older dude.

Boxing Daria - A great Daria episode. I thought this was a brilliant last episode, because it finally kind of sheds some light on why Daria is the way she is. It was a heavy episode, but at the same time it still had some of Daria's classic charm.

Daria! - The musical episode is so hilarious to me! I think some people don't like it, but to me it is just so cheesy it's funny. It is clearly a parody episode of musicals, and I thought it was done wonderfully. God god dammit! Lol.
It's hard narrowing down to just 5, there are soooooo many other episodes I absolutely LOVE, but I went with these since these were the ones which had a big impact on me as a Daria fan, entertained me the most, etc.
you are not a beautiful and unique snowflake.

Oh gosh, only 5? Well, here goes, in approximate order - really it changes according to my mood:

Write Where it Hurts

Arts n' Crass

Quinn the Brain

Through a Lens Darkly

Art Burn

You actually named all my favorites in the order of my preference, except for "Fair Enough." Also, I do prefer "Boxing Daria" over "Write Where it Hurts" mainly because seeing story after story does get a little old after a while, but her final one is great of course. In a lot of ways, too, I think "Boxing Daria" is much more relateable in the sense that we see how her alienation in her early childhood affects every and all aspects of her lifefamily, friends, romances, school, and even her interests (i.e. reading and writing, which both require some solitude to flourish). No matter how we the viewers think about our lives, we have all been damaged or hurt by people who did not do so intentionally. And even though we all must have at least one person in whom we can confide, everyone feels lonely at some point, just like Daria must feel most of the time. As you mentioned, both these episodes give great insight on what goes on in Daria's head, and the stories are simple enough to be universal and profound.
Why did I write? Because I found life unsatisfactory.
