It seems to me that 90% of sitcom jokes are based on that simple premise. A character is supposed to be one thing, but is really another. The mayor in Spin City is unable to manage even the simplest thing. The comedy enters with the character's flaws.
Maya's archetypal joke is sort of "I'm really ethical superior and not superficial but these red pumps are sooo cute!"

Maya's wasn't. She legitimately thought she was better than she was, and everyone else esteemed that opinion, despite it's obvious defects

Yeah! And Frasier Crane, claiming to be such a professional psyciatrist, yet kept treating his family poorly and only thinking of his own base desires.
Or Tim Taylor from Home Improvement who is supposed to be a handyman, yet he's a total clutz!
Or Ray Romano, the show is "Everybody loves Raymond" yet his brother clearly
