I found it funny that the Cubans (or were they supposed to be Spaniards?) working on that ship spoke with a dialect from Mexico. People from Spain and people from Cuba have totally different dialects than people from Mexico. Their dialects are as different as Texans, Bostonians, and folks from New York.

Not that hard. Attention to detail is fundamental. Guillermo del Toro being himself Mexican DID NOT cast Mexicans to play spaniards on "Pam's Labyrinth".

Well that's Hollywood for you. I guess they were not too worried about portraying Spanish and Portuguese speakers accurately as they casted Mexicans, Cubans and Puerto Ricans (John Ortiz's Spanish was just atrocious, good thing he doesn't say much in this movie) to play them. They were more worried about portraying Americans and Africans more accurately I guess.
I'm sure Portuguese people didn't appreciate one bit having Mexicans play them. Spielberg didn't even bother casting Brazilians for Pete's sake at least to get the language right.
