I found the "Let us be free!" scene to be really awkward and ridiculous. the way the melodramatic music swelled in the background. to the way everyone in the courtroom was staring at him. it almost felt like a scene from a Spoof film.

I agree. Poorly done scene. Heavy handed with the over-the-top music buildup and everything.

Yes, it did, and it was a well-known incident from the trial. But I agree with the OP. The scene could have been done better.

No it didn't tarnish the film. I was just sitting there like "Wtf??" the scene really just distratced me for a moment.
