i think both films are equally great.
i agree Amistad is avery underrated film but that doesnt make it better than Schindlers list.
someone here said that many people is more interested in schindlers story because its about a men who saved hundreads but Amistad did the same thing.
here Mr Baldwing is the equal to Schindler.
both starated with a similar motive which their was self interest
Schindler at the beginning started doing for money meanwhile Baldwing started helping because he wanted to become famous and get prestige as lawyer.
at the end both got attached to the people they were saving and changed their motives for what they were doing .

Having Matthew McConnaughey in a movie automatically disqaulifies you from greatness.

I agree, I think it's better. However all the political manoeuverings aren't going to be so popular as Schindler's list's story of one man saving hundreds. Amistad is a film that has improved for me over viewings. I've seen it 3 times, and each time I've been more impressed by it.

I agree with you on this one, simply because I am more of a student of American history than I am of the Holocaust or European history. I think the movie was a great drama, although I don't believe it to be very accurate.
I think for many Americans, it is hard to embrace movies about slavery, segregation and the Civil Rights movement. There are a lot of good films made on African-American heritage but I think because these movies bring up a lot of pain for blacks and guilt for whites, they get overlooked again and again. Yes, I would say that we are quite lucky to have both, however I agree with the OP. This film is criminally underrated while SL gets far more attention. Both films are directed intricately and with elaborate dramatic detail. Beautifully tragic and magical, I am moved and equally disgusted by both.
I think what a poster or two said further down the board is true. The film raises issues and memories that many American viewers are not comfortable with. How amazing is it that such an important piece of cinema can be glossed over it because of folks' discomfort with truth.

IMHO, they are both immensely important and affecting pieces of work - each in its own way very special and inspirational - and kudos to S Spielberg for his guiding hand in both. Does it have to be a competition? Wouldn't you say we are just plain lucky to have both?
