i watched this movie a while ago, and saw it again in history class yesterday, how is it only rated 14A? i was under the impression that people were more sensitive to violence and nudity. I assumed it would be rated R untill i looked on the video box, what with the really graphic scenes of the slaves being whipped on the tecora, the mutiny, etc etc, and there's a lot of full frontal nudity, wtf? why didnt people freak over that like they did for Alexander, where the full frontal nude scene was cut cause it disturbed test audiences too much? maybe because in amistad it's not in a sexual sense? this is really bothering me.

Yes. There is a considerable difference between Canadian and U.S. rating systems, the most basic being that in Canada with a few exceptions films are required by law to be rated and that the ratings are required to be enforced. Neither is true in the U.S. (Note to U.S. readers: The Canadian R is an "adults only" rating like the U.S. NC-17.)
My observation is that movies rated R in the U.S. are usually rated 14A in Ontario and Manitoba. Still, the Canadian system is much harsher with respect to violence which sometimes sends films into 18A and R territory. An exception to the exceptionThere seems to be greater leeway for historical films. For example, both
Schindler's List
and
Die Flscher
got 14A ratings in spite of the violence and nudity.
