It was clearly obvious she was sh!t-scared of Lefty.. you could see this in the 'kitchen' scene.
I'm sure she really wanted out but didn't have the courage to leave him.
She seemed to have low self-esteem issues.

I got the impression she was more embarrassed about how he was speaking to her in front of Donnie rather than being afraid. There's nothing in the movie to suggest that he was an overly abusive partner.
