The end of the movie reflects as if after all those years he got 500 dollars for all this effort. But Donnie clearly lied when during the florida raid he said to Sonny that they got all. And obv later we saw he was keeping that money bag at home. What happened with that 200 000 or so dollars donnie had managed to hide. Clearly even the cops didnt knew about it.

Definitely read the book. It explains everything.
In short, there was no boat money. He didnt "become like them" and he didnt have a problem with his case officer and he was much closer to Sonny than Lefty.

It was never explained in the film. One can only guess Donnie kept the money particularly after only receiving a $500 bonus for all those years of strife, almost getting killed and the disruption of his family life. (In real life there was no "boat money.")
He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
