This thread started when I was a few months from getting out of the Navy. Now it's so old the guy who enlisted is probably out too.
Four years ain't nothing for the experience. I wouldn't recommend the military to anyone, but if you're compelled, it's not that hard and if it's only 4 years, you'll probably enjoy most of it.
Anyone wanting to be a SEAL, I knew one SEAL in my time in the Navy, and I knew a dozen drop-outs. If you're not 100% on being a SEAL but want something close to it, there are other options that are bad ass, but not the end all challenge of a lifetime. If you fail out of SEAL training, you don't get the next closest thing, you go to the fleet in whatever bitch job you thought you'd never be doing. Just realize if you shoot for the moon you can crash hard. On the other hand, don't go killing yourself if you fail, often you can try again if you give that much of a sh!t.

Even though this thread is ancient, I just wanted to say that the misinformation in here is highlarious.

Read this with interest but one thing occured to me:-
your original question asked about if army training was really like as portrayed in the film, so ok fair enough, but then you reveal you have an army boyfriend, so why not just ask him??

Well, I am out now, since October of 2015. I was medboard due to a surgery (rotated cuff) and on disability. I was at least in for almost 7 years and I am currently enrolled in school for Human Resource Management. I sometimes miss the Army but happy to be out, my body just cannot handle it anymore. I will always be appreciated and honor for being a part of the United States Army. Right now, my husband is still in and I am so proud being an Army wife.

well, its going on 2years now since i went to basic training. i would say, for a 37 years old (i was 35 when i joined), i'm doing okay. i just resently re-enlist again for another 4 years. got married last year with another soldier. i'm hoping to get hawaii next year. i am stationed here at fort lee, virginia. i am enjoying it so far.

hello everybody..im back..its been almost a year since the last time left a message at this message board. well..i did it..i joined the Army..i went to basic training at Ft. Jackson, June 10. i am here now, stationed in Ft. Lee, VA. its okay but the weather is bad..well, you know, im used to the Florida weather. but im lovin it right. we are deploying this coming May of 2009. wish me luck! and ohit has nothing like G.I. Janeit was much easierLoL!

WOW God bless your boyfriend and you as well. His service is greatly appreciated. And, it is only my opinion, but you are certainly doing the right thing-however it is really your decision that matters.
Either way congrats on working so hard to do what it takes to serve our great country. Def keep in touch and good luck. I think it is amazing what you are doing. And thank your b/f for me.

thank you soooo much, such comforting words..that's exactly what i needed,,i am getting close..took my physical last week everything was okay exept for my BP. which i never had a problem with my blood presure before, i lost about 20 lbs. since the last time i went to the recruiter office, (nov. 07). so, i know i cut down on a lot when it comes to food and exercised more. will see, but im getting close & im not backing down unless they told me i can't. but thank you so much guys, i hope i am doing the right thing here. my boyfriend of 13 years whom i share 2 kids, is been in the army for almost 27 years. been in afghanistan for 2 years..so its my turn and he is retiring soon..tell you guys all about it..i will keep in touch!!!!

You are so welcome. And remember, it doesn't matter what your test score was. Once you are in it is up to you to do your best and excel, no matter your age or anything else. Believe in yourself and you can do great things! Your children will be very proud I'm sure as will all of us-your fellow countrymen/women.

hey, i guys. i started this thread way back, well, i don't remember whenanyway, some of the comments are a bit scary. well, guess what, i took the test yesterday, (2/7/08) and passed, not a high score but good enough for me, i have been trying to get it for a long time, anyways, i did it, passed it so it looks like i will be joining the army.tell you all about it once i am inthanks for the info..still worried about the basic traininglike i said before, i am 34 years old with 2 kids so.oh wellgood luck to me..hehehe

I went to college before I was mentally ready for it (read: mature) and joined the navy after a few semesters.
9:45 on the run may be well above average for your gym class, but you need to work on it if you want to be a SEAL. Also, being a 'decent' swimmer won't cut it. You need to swim like a fish. I highly recommend checking out the SEAL website to read up on recommended ability levels.
I'm not trying to discourage you, but if SEALs is something you really want to do, you can't go into it half-cocked or you won't even pass the screen test.
The Navy in general is a very good option for people who want to delay going to college. You can get some serious money for school. If you fall in with the right crowd, you can do really, really well.

im 19 and im thinkin of joining the navy i took the asvab test and scored a 73, but im trying to figure out if i want to go back to school with my friends. Ill probley just beep off in college so im thinking the navy is the best bet. If i do join my main priority would to become a seal i have the physical shape im 6 foot 2 173 lbs and can do 1000 pushups and 1000 situps in 45 minutes(do it every night i get home from working at academy) and ran 1.5 miles in 9:46. I am also a decent swimmer i mean i never swam for my highschool or competative so im wondering if that will hurt me.Just wondering what type of mentally brutal things i should prepare for before i sign because i want to atleast somewhat prepare for the hell.

If your friend did what the Seals, Marines, and Rangers do in a span of 8 months, your friend would be dead.
You obviously have no clue what you're talking about, so please avoid giving out advice.

This reply isn't 100% correct, at least not for the Army. The Army has seperate BCT and AIT for most specialties, but if you happen to go Infantry, you will not go to BCT and AIT. You go through OSUT (One Station Unit Training), and as someone has already noted, it is tougher than BCT for most specialties.
Oh, and before BMI wants to ask my qualifications, I spent ten years in the US Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Special Forces.
Oh, and if you are serious about medical training in the military and want to be the best?
Try for 18D in the Army or PJ in the Air Force.

thnks (superBMI). i will. i guess i better hurry on up huh? like i said, after 2+ in college, i should be smarter than i was the last time i tried to get in.its so crazy, the score for the (asvab) army to pass is a 31 and on my score on that test i took i got a 30..it was crazywell, i told myself, i will give it another chance, and hopefully my degree (AA) will help at all..i told my husband its my turn, he just came back from afghanistan after being gone for 2 years. well, wish me luck, and thank you.
