I did not see it for so many years because it took FOREVER to get released on DVD, but watching it again was a breath of fresh air and I couldn't figure it out. Yes, part of it is childhood nostalgia, but that's only part of it. What I realized I loved so much watching them is despite the dated 90s fashions and trends, like the futuristic Mondo-burger pre-Backstreet outer space suits, was how REAL everybody looked. Look at this:
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr01/2013/3/11/17/anigif_e nhanced-buzz-10954-1363036041-6.gif
These could be the kids in anybody's neighborhood, they could be your next door neighbor, they are REAL, REALER than anybody you see today. Look at Monique,
That is just a natural, REAL beauty, not a Barbie doll, not a Pussycat doll, not a Bratz doll, just REAL, she's not all made up and gawdy and glittery and whatever else they do with the girls on Nickelodeon and Disney now, it's just a group of realistic looking teenagers, everybody looks real, like the Midnight Society in Are You Afraid of the Dark?, everybody's not perfect, they're not a clone of each other, they're just REAL. That's something you never see anymore sadly.

This movie got a lot of things right (it's not easy to make an okay movie, let alone a memorable, funny movie), and I agree, who Monique was is one of them.
