When Gena Rowlands is telling Bernice the story about her brother, we see Birdee listening and her face briefly morphs to the younger version of herself.

I would have to say it was the cheerleader doing the air splits part. Unless, of course, Sandra can do her own stunts like that at her age in the movie.
An independent mind is difficult to enslave.
