Until I saw a few minutes of it on TV just now. Holy hell. Sandra Bullock has to be one of the worst actresses of all time. We basically see the extent of her talent in Speed and Demolition Man. It's downright funny when she tries to do any serious acting. It doesn't help that the movie itself sucks. I once read that she only starred in Speed 2 as a bargaining chip to get this turd of a film made. I'm not even sure which movie was worse!
"It wasn't me who was murdered, was it?"

You're certainly entitled to your opinion and I'm certainly entitled to disagreeand I do. Personally, I love this movie. I think it's Sandra Bullock's best performance. I love that she has an awakening and becomes a "real" person, an individual, more than an extension of her douchebag husband. Her mama is portrayed as a lunatic initially, but she learns to accept her anyway. She has learned to not judge people after being humiliated on national televisionwhich is also a statement on the world we live in today. A world in which people would sell their soul for their own 15 minutes of "fame".
The kid is adorable! The scene when Superdad drives off and leaves herheartbreaking. The scene when mom and grandma do the singing thingheartwarming.
And the soundtrackwonderful.

It's your opinion that she's a bad actress, and that's fine. It's your opinion that this movie is bad, and that's fine.
I disagree with you on both counts. She was (to me) very good in this film, and the film itself (again, to me) was also very good. It is one of my favorite movies. I also think she's a good actress. Now, Jennifer Lopez, there's a bad actress. I can't stand her.
Now, Demolition Man, that was a bad film. I happen to like that movie, but I will freely admit that it was a bad film.
What I like about Hope FLoats, is that it shows a woman who managed to make it out of the small town she grew up in. Unfortunately, she got out by marrying her childhood sweetheart, and the marriage didn't work out. She goes back to that small town, and now has to overcome new obstacles. The negative views of those she snubbed in high school, her mother, whom she still sees/thinks of as an embarrassment, etc.
She managed to make some people (Dot specifically) see that she is not the same person from high school. She's better, more humble, more down to earth. It also manages to stay realistic in the fact that the two do not become friends, but they do become acquaintances who respect each other, and sometimes that can be more important than being friends.
Further, she manages to come to terms with some personal views and sees that some people have not improved with age, and are still the same "mean girls" they always were, and she realizes that she doesn't want to be friends with them.
So, there are some good things about this film, which I can appreciate and identify with, and that is why I feel it's a good film. It also has one of my favorite songs (Smile) in it.
