Answering some questions about this movie that I have seen being discussed on this boardI just re-watched it last night:
What really happened to the father
Marty does in fact know that what Jackie was saying at the end was the truth. In the beginning he retorts to his mother "Dad didn't die a slow death mother" - on top of that, he is buried with his father at the end of the movie
Anthony being the son of Marty and Jackie-O
They are 14 when they first make love, the story in the movie takes place 20 years later and Anthony is younger than 23 and just came home from dropping out of college. The awkward look Marty and Jackie give off when Anthony states, "All the good stuff happened before I was born." This could be because of the truth he was their son or the fact that their father died, however if it was in due to the father dying then most likely he wouldn't of been his son. So this fact is still quite ambiguous however I believe it to be so..
Marty's moral ambiguity
Everyone has their way of dealing with things, Jackie got a bit chaotic, the mother trying to turn a blind eye with unconditional love for her family, and Marty tried to "become normal." When he claims that is what he wants his mother responds, "It's a little too late for that." To me it is very clear that Marty still has very strong feelings for Jackie, even Marty's girlfriend noticed how freely the two went back 'n forth so well. Additionally, Marty remembered precisely the night with Jackie-O while he asks Lesly to bring him back and she has to remind him of many of the details of their "wonderful Sunday" together.
Oh and at the end Jackie wasn't telling Marty to stop, Marty asks if she wants him to stop and she says yes stopI see this more as turn the camera off lets get down to business more than anythings, and there commences their intimate relationships.
Anyway theirs my two cents and feedbackhope this was helpful to a few, feel free to discuss
