I was really surprised when Bud was alive at the end. Wasn't expecting it. When he got shot in the head by the chief (can't remember his name) I was thinking, "He'd dead." Was really surprised.

It would have been strange to have the protagonist die without a memorable exit line. I thought he was dead but didn't make much sense to have him disappear without some payoff.

Yes, Bud took a few shots. But the 'head shot' is shown to go through his cheek. It obviously messed up his jaw because he couldn't speak, but it wasn't as bad as a hit to the skull. The other shots could have been more life threatening.
