I'd say Darryl ruined his own life by getting involved with Vanessa. Don't mess with chicks with baggage.

Man, I tried my hardest not to laugh at your response because everything you said there was so true. I wasn't expecting that plot twist to happen and when the parole officer told Darryl why his story didn't make since and why that guy was chasing after him, we later learned who the mystery assailant was.
I almost kinda felt bad for the dude, especially after what he did to himself afterwards. I was like 'dizaaam!' that guy had it rough and that's how he chose to end it? That's when I understood what Darryl meant when he said he wished Trip had survived so he could kill him himself cause Trip had royally screwed up Darryl's life in the worst way after he died in that heist.

Poor guy was probably making minimum wage at that crappy bank and then has his manhood blown off by some drug dealer. And to make matters worse, before he can enact any revenge on the dude, he gets killed soon after in the failed getaway.
Not saying he was a normal dude before that (I'm pretty sure he wasn't), but I guess everyone would react differently to losing their dick & balls like that. Great plot twist though with his character.
