If she didn't kiss him then there would not be a film or rather a very different film.
This is where it becomes the passive male fantasy which doesn't happen on screen very often or in real life.
Does this passive male approach only work in the movies?

What kind of a stupid question is this? Spoiler alert. films aren't real life you know and things may happen on screen that may not happen in reality.

I would have no problem with her taking charge. However, it looked like she was annoyed or embarrassed for most of their time together. It wasn't like she was trying to flirt with him and he was too dense to pick up the signals. It was nothing and then the kiss.

i think it's important to remember hugh's character was divorced. his wife left him, so he was a very insecure man. in this instance, yes the woman has to be the persistent one. we're just used to seeing women insecure, not men. i thought it was a nice change.

That whole scene in his house was just so awkward. It really floundered. And then, all of a sudden, she kisses him, full on the mouth. There was no twinkling of attraction, and then she just kisses him like that. What was she thinking??

I don't find passive men appealing at all. I am not sure how succesful they are likely to be in real life. I personally don't think I would have a problem with being in a relationship with someone poorer than me, but the total lack of self confidence is what woukd render him unappealing to me.

Two things. To quote Chris Rock: "Women don't marry down". Especially the type that could make it to Britain and have enormous amount of time to spend on a serious relationship inside the country. They certainly ain't marrying your average football hooligan.
Second, would you say British men in the upper classes are more reserved or totality gregarious and outgoing like American men? That's why American female/British gentleman relationships work out well. Opposites attract and match very well together. It seems to work for all the friends I know involved in an Anglo American marriage. Not close to one divorce so far.
Alice Eve explains it well from the opposite perspective:
If she can't get British men to ask her out.. My Gosh!

Newsflash! Most "British men" are not like Hugh Grant's character in this movie. If your statistic is correct I suggest it is because British men seek relationships with American ladies, because their immediate alternatives aren't very attractive!

Wow, talk about losing the plot. This film helps explain why so many American women are married to British men, more than any other I've seen. It has very little to do with the "passive male fantasy" which only would be thought about if you're extremely immature in life or live in a cave.

Well when I met my wife 25 years ago I was sort of passive and she initiated the first kiss. We were adults of similar age as the characters in Notting Hill. So from my experience it happens in real life. In my case I was afraid of chasing her away if I came on too strong, so she took the initiative. I have to say it worked out pretty well!
