On the cable tv guide it describes the
amazing chemistry
between Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in this movie. I thought there was zero chemistry and didn't buy into their relationship at all. A 5 vote for me

There seemed to be very few scenes where they were together where they looked comfortable and relaxed. The bedroom scene was one of the rare good ones.
Everything seemed awkward between them most of the time. You have that painful scene in his house for the first time where he is going through his fridge. Then, totally inexplicably, she kisses him. What? Where did that come from??
I understand that we are supposed to feel that Will is in over his head, in a surreal world. But if it is so difficult for him, and he seems to be getting nowhere most of the time, why would he bother?
Then you have the key scene towards the end of the film, where she comes back to his store. This should have been a very powerful scene, but the editing just killed it for me, with the constant changing of frame. It felt like they weren't even in the same room together.

I'm with you once_again; I felt no chemistry between Grant and Roberts. Zero. As a straight woman, Hugh Grant exudes chemistry with me, the viewer, because he's just so damn sexy and adorable. Personally, I've never found Julia Roberts very appealing. I think she's way overrated, as an acting talent, or a beauty. I didn't feel chemistry between Grant and Roberts, OR between their characters, William and Anna. William is sweet and lovable, but Anna is horrid. Really, she's a jerk. She treats him like garbage and I think William was right to say "no more" when she turned up at the bookshop at the end with the painting. So what that it was an original Dali? Material goods like this mean nothing to Hollywood film stars. She tells Will's friend that she made $30 million her last picture. If the Dali painting cost her $1.5 million, she has $28.5 million left after its purchase. It won't make a dent in her grocery bill. So an Anna Scott can afford to throw away an extravagant gift like this on a person she wants to manipulateer, um, I mean impress. I was sad for him that he caved on his resolve to pick his self-respect over Anna's dog-whistle to him to do tricks for her at her command, while he begs for scraps she tosses himif she feels like it.
No chemistry at all.

Wasn't it supposed to be awkward?, she was a movie star and he was a regular Joe. The point of the film was that real love transcends social conditioning and society's false constructs.
i agree with this. i thought they had great chemistry, but how would you react if a famous movie star fell in love with you? it would be WEIRD. i have made some friends in the business and it's still weird to me that i'm allowed to hug them and talk to them like they're regular people. these are people i grew up admiring and one day they refer to me as 'oh she's just an old pal'. WTF? i think they had great chemistry, but i agree it was awkward in the 'first love, sixth grade' kind of way, at least at first. late in the film of course, will gets enough courage to finally tell her the way he feels treated is not ok, so that shows the novelty and 'star struckedness' wore off.

I agree. I'm watching it right now and it's what's bothering me the most about this movie: they make the worst movie couple. They just don't go together at all and there is zero chemistry. Not believable at all.

Physics? Mathematics? Chemistry?
I took no issue, they seemed perfect for each other within the fictional construct of the story. One of my favorite movies, I find it easy to identify with the issues each characters has, not just the two main characters. And there is lots of good humor.
