I watched this movie again, really enjoyed it. Messed me up a little but it's great. My only question I really have was that if Tracy was such a go getter then why wasn't she already class president? Didn't she ever run before? Maybe they explained this in the movie and I wasn't paying attention or maybe it's in the book. Just curious because it seems like she already would be in that position.

I think because she had to work her way up over the years in high school. She couldn't just come in as a freshman and do that. Remember she complained about Tammy, who was a sophomore running?

They were all running for student council president, not class president.

But isn't Tammy running as a sophomore against them? I believe the principal or Mr M. identifies her as such before she makes her speech.

Because she's a junior running for senior class president. She's been in student government for every class grade level in her career, so being "senior class president" would just be the cherry on top of her "illustrious" credentials/accomplishments. And she fully expects to get the position, because she's a type-A, cutthroat overachiever.
