The idea of the Ghostface Killer actually being a
Stab
fan club of high-schoolers honestly sounds like a pretty awesome idea for such a
Scream
film, let alone a Whodunit, and would've given it a somewhat
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
-esque feel to it. I don't care how flawed it sounds, if I'd have watched that reveal
("..and they all rose up.. not dead")
for the first time, I think I would've turned shocked and wide-eyed from it, no doubt.
It's such a shame that such an idea had never made it into a
Scream
film, but it's also nice to finally hear what Kevin Williamson originally had in mind for
Scream 3

I wish I could find the script again ..in my opinion I would say it was either a partial script someone embellished or someone had very detailed plot details and went with that I don't think it was 100% Kevin Williamson either way.
However I do remember when watching the first season of the following certain scenes removed me a lot of what I read so at least some of it was real .I recall a cop being unmasked as the main movie killer ..a lot of scenes with Stu and Sidney .
I know ppl call it absurd the idea of Stu being around but I think they might be missing the bigger point too..absurd or not Stu was a pretty awesome killer and for a lot of ppl that matters more I don't care how how far far-fetched it would have been if have preferred Stu being his crazy self to Roman boring us how neglected he felt

There may not have been a finished script, but the people involved have said that that was definitely the original idea behind Scream 3, regardless of how absurd it seems.

I can't imagine it being real, I don't think there was ever a script with Stu being the killer. As bad as this movie is, I really have difficulty believing that such a script would actually be better. It sounds like such a bad idea.

Yes, I recall Matthew Lillard mentioning he was supposed to be in the third movie. But did that really happen? Wasn't he the only source to mention this? (I haven't really researched it.) That was an awful idea, to be honest.
Also, Columbine happened in april 1999. One would think a first draft of the script would've been finished already. It doesn't seem that was the case?

Well, according to Lillard this got changed just three weeks before shooting and they had to buy him out, so it almost definitely would have been made if not for Columbine.
Kevin Williamson also revealed his plotline (which might have been part of the Stu one, it's unclear): In my original story for Scream 3, the killers were basically a fanclub of Woodsboro kids that had formed because of Stab 1 and Stab 2 They were all doing the killings and the big surprise of the movie was when Sidney walked into the house after Ghostface had killed everyone and they all rose up. None of them were actually dead and theyd planned the whole thing. The motive was their quest for fame, so I just placed that into one character with Scream 4. They were trying to top [Sidneys] Woodsboro story so they could be the legacy of their hometown. All those ideas metamorphosed into The Following.
He says he was too busy to write a draft, but this definitely wouldn't have been made right after Columbine.

Right, but that was just a plot outline, I'm not sure what they would've done with that if Columbine hadn't happened. I really can't believe they would've included Stu being the mastermind. But maybe it would've taken place in Woodsboro with the kids being the killers. A different setting than Hollywood would've been so much better, in my opinion.

The whole original plot. It was originally set in Woodsboro again and Stu was supposed to be masterminding the attacks from prison. The killers were teenagers again, along with most of the victims. But in the wake of Columbine, the idea was too controversial, so they dumped it and moved the story to a completely adult setting and presumingly added more comedy to the film to lessen the mood.

Just more blood, no? I mean, what exactly did they change because of Columbine?
