Figures I came here because I hated the soundtrack, but it seems I am the minority. No surprise there. I found the song on the radio playing over the intro jarring during the retirement speech, it didn't seem to fit.
Other times the music just felt overused. E.g. they play creepy music as they exit their car, why? Nothing happens, they just walk up to the generals house.

I've always found TGD pretty underestimated. It's solid Hollywood entertainment with a unique atmosphere and overall decent acting. Of course, it's not GREAT cinema, Simon West isn't a GREAT director, Travolta's acting is over-the-top as usual, and the ending is a bit convoluted. BUT two things raise the movie's rating from a solid 6 to a honest 7 : James Woods (how great are his scenes with Travolta ?) and the AWESOME soundtrack, indeed.
In the late 90s, Carter Burwell helped two decent flicks become instant-classics in my books : this one, and Conspiracy Theory will Mel Gibson. Same instruments, same vibe. I wonder why he stopped doing stuff like that afterwards.

I absolutely loved it.
It was very underrated, I thought.
My favourite had to be the part where they're flying in by helicopter. Also, at the end, right before the credits.
