Gladiator was the type of epic the Academy loves, they gave out Oscars to other historical epics in the 90s like Braveheart, Titanic, English Patient etc. Cast Away was never a front runner for all the awards, it was smaller personal story and more a showcase for the lead actor’s performance.

After rewatching it recently I got the impression that it won a lot, I think I had remembered he had a Nom. For Oscar Lead, and lost, coming to find out it didnt win anything and was only nominated for two awards, and losing to both on Gladiator.
