Because Richard Roundtree is IN the movie and he plays Shaft! Jackson is Shaft's newphew. Couldn't they get that right, at least?
There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

Friday the 13th (2009) wasn't a real remake but that's not the point. It was not tied to the same continuity as the films before it so it having just "Friday the 13th" in it's title made sense. Shaft (2000) is a bigger deal since it wasn't starting a new continuity.
So Evil Dead (2013) DOES connect to the previous films in the franchise? Well then it should have had a subtitle so people didn't think of it as a remake or reboot with a whole new continuity.

Friday the 13th (2009) and Evil Dead (2013) aren't continuations of the original continuity of the films before them though. So it makes sense for them to have the same titles as the original films. They're starting from scratch.

Perhaps they could have gone the Rocky Balboa route and called it John Shaft. It does seem kind of odd that it would simply be called Shaft since it's actually the fourth film in the series as opposed to a remake.
