"According to an interview with Christian Bale, one of the main reasons why he took the role was because of a fight scene between Walter Wade and Shaft on an airport runway. The scene was filmed but was cut to make room for more scenes with Jeffrey Wright who scored highly with preview audiences."
Reading this fills me with an intense hatred for preview audiences. Peoples (worst character name ever) is a joke, and consequently every scene with him in it is a joke. He's a substandard villain that would be more at home in a Uwe Boll project. The film would be a lot stronger if they hadn't trampled over the main story in order to add more scenes with this putz.

Certainly agree one of the best things. Bale was good too as a despicable villain, who didn't want to push drugs.

I thought he was excellent. I had not heard of Jeffrey Wright prior to this movie. He made me believe that he was actually Latino.

Just watched it, and as I remembered after watching for the first time some 14 years ago, Jeffrey Wright makes the film. The rest is meh, but Wright steals the show. Wish we could have seen Wright play more outlandish roles. Great acting.

Same here. I can understand the preview audience's enthusiasm for him as a villain, where he seems to be playing against type to a certain extent. In many of the roles I've seen him in, he's far more restrained, less physical and more studious. In Shaft he was pure menace.
