I was thinking why didn't they let them go instead of murdering them? Wasn't it something from the bible about slaughter of the innocent or something?

Because they are evil, duh. Why would they send the kids home unharmed when they can create some bonus pain and suffering for free? Besides, they hadnt found the girl yet, so sending the kids home would get them unwanted attention.
