The thread "the undisputed definitive explanation of the movie" did a good job of making the case that this was all about the wife's jealousy. However, I'm not sure I felt that was really well set up.
I find it a little hard to believe that if she was that jealous, she would have withdrawn from her husband like that. In my experience, jealous women tend to insulate their significant others to the point at which no one else can get to the poor, smothered guy.
I'm also not sure I feel she would have been as upset about his attentions to a pre-teen/teen. Even if she had suspected pedophilia, it might not have made a big blip on her radar because she herself was somewhat corrupt, unless she had completely given up on trying to compete. In that case, I guess I could see her allowing the search as a way to ruin him. But remember, he's the one who seemed jealous at the Christmas gathering with the sister and the wife seemed to comport herself maturely throughout the film. Of course, it is true that her own relationship with him began, really, at the age of 11, and the number 14 was then mentioned, but apparently they waited until she was in college. He might have come close to being a pedophile, but not quite.
What do you think do you think the movie made sense in terms of being driven by the wife's jealousy?
P.S. Maybe the movie is a good object lesson in why it is a good idea to stick someone your own age.
P.P.S. There is another movie out there with the same name made nine years earlier and starring Liam Neeson, but from a quick look at the description it bears no resemblance.
