tldr: america sucks **** you
In my book, Anatomy of Failure: Why America Loses Every War It Starts, I explain that one of the endemic causes of failure was due to the acute lack of knowledge and understanding of the circumstances in which force was used. Obviously, ideology, politics, group think, bureaucratic ineptness and other factors contributed. However, in retrospect, perhaps another reason demonstrated failure: stupidity.
And, quixotically, is it possible that stupidity arises from a "stupid gene" deeply embedded in human DNA? Of course, what is stupid as opposed simply to committing an error or making a mistake? Is cognitive dissonance, that is, actions known to be harmful or dangerous, such as smoking or taking risks that are foolish, simply an extension of stupidity? Or is stupidity ignorance and lack of intelligence and IQ? And what happens when something stupid, such as making the wrong decision, turns out well or a stupid bet returns a huge amount of money?
That said, many decisions made by states are, by any definition, "stupid." No rational person would have allowed the events of 1914 to turn into a world war. Yet that happened. No capable American politician would allow the national debt to soar to $23 trillion, accepting annual deficits in excess of $1 trillion. Yet, that is the case.
American failure in using force often arose from various degrees of stupidity, in turn arising from arrogance and a sense of superiority. For the United States, for understandable reasons, World War II produced arrogance and this sense of superiority. America's first 14 decades of existence and protective isolation provided by two vast oceans and natural resources of incalculable value moderated and contained most of stupidity. The attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking the American battle fleet changed that in December 1941.
In three and a half years, from a standing start, the arsenal of democracy armed America and its allies, ultimately forcing the fascist enemies of Japan, Italy and Germany to surrender unconditionally. In 1945, with much of the world in ruin, America was the strategic, military and economic colossus dominating the globe. That achievement led to an arrogance and sense of superiority, as well as an unshakeable belief in the righteousness of democracy and its universal appeal.
That would lead to disastrous and some stupid decisions. For the first two decades of the Cold War, America acted often with impunity in overthrowing or attempting to overthrow regimes antithetical to democracy, from Latin America to Iran. As John Kennedy put it in 1961, "We will pay any price and bear any burden" to advance the cause of liberty.
Vietnam showed how wrong those promises and pretenses were. In retrospect, three presidents made stupid decisions that produced 58,000 dead Americans and countless Vietnamese in the first war the United States lost since the Civil War.
Failure would persist. Grenada, Lebanon, Afghanistan and the second Iraq War turned to be disasters of one form or another. Only the George H.W. Bush administration avoided the peril of the "stupid gene." This gene is not confined to these shores. Brexit may well prove to be a really stupid decision taken by the United Kingdom. And China's handling of the coronavirus is bordering on stupidity run amok.
Alas, the stupid gene is at work in today's American domestic politics. The failed Democratic ploy to impeach and convict the president; a Democratic Party split between nominating the inconceivable or the unelectable; and the demise of the Republican Party under Donald Trump are the latest symptoms of this gene's presence. No doubt the 2020 campaign will produce many more acts of stupidity beyond the Iowa caucus debacle.
Sadly, foreign policy is far from immune. The last and current administration have made China and Russia not merely competitors but adversaries and potential enemies. U.S. military strategy is "to deter and, if war comes, defeat" either. To say this is stupid understates the meaning of this word.
No one has defined what deter or defeat means and whether these are even achievable aims. Yes, China and Russia have interests that conflict with ours, allies and friends. Yet, which of these conflicts would cause a war? No one has answered this question other than through hypothetical scenarios such as China invading Taiwan or Russia moving into the Baltics, the latter an assault no Russian leader would seriously consider.
Historians well into the future will ponder how all this has happened and why so many stupidity induced acts occurred simultaneously. Possibly, as Shakespeare observed, "To err is human." And possibly that underestimates the power of the stupid gene. One can only hope that a future Nobel laureate is working hard on a cure.

In the United States, we often equate health with access to medical care. However, researchers have long recognized that medical care contributes only about 10 to 20 percent to the health of individuals.
One crucial component of good health is access to education. However, the Trump budget includes cuts of more than $300 billion across the entire education spectrum from Head Start to grants that support college education.

Now don't get me wrong. I think it is stupid and in poor taste to do so as a political statement. However I support the right of people to do so. In fact I'd like to have a bunch of carts scattered throughout all the major muslim cities selling American flags. I would then have a group that posted inflamatory rhetoric online to cause muslim rioting. I'd sell out as they bought flags to burn. I'd end up with a pocket full of cash and those fools would end up poorer with a handful of ashes.
For a long time I was politically conservative. However, I eventually noticed a flaw in the conservative philosophy. Even worse this same flaw is shared by the hated liberals. It is an urge to ban activities that people find personally offensive regardless of an individuals right to practice said activity.
What sense does it make to attempt to defend a symbol of freedom by depriving others of their freedom? I chose to serve, potentially putting myself in harms way. I swore an oath to defend the freedom of others. I may not agree with what those people say but I will defend to the death the right of those people to say it. While our constitution may afford one the right to express their opinion it does not give one the right to curtail them freedom of others to do the same.
Another issue I see is the idol worship mentality. Lets go back a couple thousand years. A man heads into the woods to chop down a tree. He tosses part of the tree in the fire to cook his meal. He carves the other into a idol which he sells at the local market. The buyer takes it home, sets it up in a shrine and worships it as a god. Was the tree divine? What about the part he burned? Can god be bought or sold? And in the old days when an idol was destroyed it was treated as sacrilege. People could get killed for disrespecting this wood carving. Does this not strike you as a primitive nutcase mentality?
Now fast forward. A farmer grows some cotton. The cotton in harvested and baled. One bale is sold to a flag maker another to an underwear maker. Now true, a flag is a symbol of the freedom we cherish but it it just a symbol. It is not the freedom itself. At the end of the day this flag is a piece of cloth. Does the fact that a certain pattern has been printed on it make it sacred? It came from the same field as the cotton that was made into boxer shorts that cover peoples asses. Are the shorts sacred too? What if the the shorts have a flag pattern printed on them? What if they crap their pants? Is that sacrilege? Should they be shot?
Hopefully a light bulb has come on and you have realized that opposition to flag burning is based in magical thinking. It is understandable. Still throughout history people have had their freedoms curtailed and even lost their lives just because someone got offended. That is wrong.
Trump is still your President. Charlie Kirk still Wins!

In 2004, Gretchen Wilson won the Best Female Country Vocal Performance Grammy award for the song "Redneck Woman." It was a milestone in a music career that was nearly derailed time and time again.
"I went through enough in my life that I could have gone off the rails," Wilson told Fox Nation host and fellow musician John Rich. "And most people, doctors, friends, most of everyone would have said, 'Well, yeah, she had every right to go off the deep end and just lose it.'"
"But I saw that in front of me… that opportunity to better myself, to better my future, to better maybe my family's future. And I took it. I think there are those choices in life," she said, "You can choose to just wallow in your own pity and sorrow and say, 'I can't, I can't.' Or you can just take the bull by the horns and say, 'I can and I will. And even if it takes me forever.'"
In an emotional new episode of Fox Nation's "The Pursuit!" John Rich sat down with Wilson to talk about her difficult upbringing, their early days pursuing careers in the music industry, and the day she decided she could be a mother and a musician.
Rich, who became friends and collaborators with Wilson after a chance meeting in a Nashville bar, said that he remembered receiving a panicked phone call from Wilson shortly after she secured her first record contract.
"You are hyperventilating on the phone, bawling your face off. I can barely understand what you're saying," he said thinking back to that day. "And you said, 'I need to see you and I need to see you right now.'"
They met in the parking lot of a Kroger supermarket outside of Nashville in the middle of a rainstorm. A soaking wet Wilson jumped into the passenger seat of Rich's truck.
"I'm looking, "I said, what is going on?" remembered Rich. "I said, 'Gretchen, what is going on? What was happening?'"
"I said, 'I'm pregnant,'" said Wilson, recalling the panic she felt at the time. "'I don't know what to do because I've got you all involved in this now… we've got the record deal now. We're in the studio, we're trying to get things started. And I'm about to just put a big wrench in everything here. And I don't know what I'm going to do… I probably should just pack up and just go back to Illinois.'"
EXCLUSIVE: WYNONNA JUDD TALKS ABOUT DAUGHTER'S PRISON RELEASE: 'SHE'S HEALTHIER THAN I WAS AT 23'
For Wilson, it was an overwhelming moment in her life when two of her greatest dreams were being realized — at the same time.
"From the time I can remember, I thought in my head and in my heart that a child would complete me," she said. "If I could have something to love and take care of and do better with than anyone ever did with me, that it would make my life make sense. And so more than anything, I wanted Grace, my daughter."
"But my second biggest dream in the world was happening," Wilson told Rich. "I was in the middle of recording and in big-time studios in Nashville, Tennessee, with big-time people. And my career was taking off and it was amazing. And then all the sudden boom… I thought I thought it was all going to come to an end."
"Then you said… 'Gretchen?" Wilson remembered. "How many kids does Loretta Lynn have?"
"And I said, 'Oh, I don't know. There's a bunch of them."
"And you said, 'If Loretta Lynn can have a career slingin' five, six, however many babies around the country with her, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do it with one."
When it was all said and done, Wilson had her career and her daughter.

As the Democratic Party primary field lurches to the left on a number of policy issues, it is being reflected among Democratic voters – with three in four Democrats saying they would back a socialist for president, according to a new poll released this month.
The Gallup poll found that 76 percent of Democratic voters would vote for a socialist. Only 17 percent of Republicans say they would vote for a socialist, and 45 percent of independents would vote for one.
BERNIE SANDERS' CAMPAIGN WALKS BACK VOW OF TOTAL DEPORTATION FREEZE
The poll comes amid the rise of self-described “democratic socialist” Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in the Democratic presidential primary race. The far-left candidate tied with the more moderate former South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg in Iowa, and won the New Hampshire primary and Nevada caucuses – boosting him into front-runner status.
Sanders has promoted once-fringe policies such as a Green New Deal, a moratorium on the deportation of illegal immigrants, free college tuition and a “Medicare-for-all” plan that would abolish private health insurance.
Other ideas such as reparations for slavery and welfare for illegal immigrants have also become popular among Democratic politicians, particularly in the Democrat-controlled House – where liberal "Squad" members such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., have been promoting policies once far out of the Democratic mainstream.
BERNIE SANDERS' SURROGATE CLAIMS MEDIA LIES ABOUT SUPPORT FOR SOCIALISM: 'OUR IDEAS ARE POPULAR'
Voters were polled by Gallup about the characteristics of potential presidents they would vote for – and it found broad acceptance of most of those traits. Of those polled, 96 percent would vote for a black candidate, 93 percent would vote for a woman, 78 percent would vote for a gay/lesbian candidate, and 66 percent would vote for a Muslim.
Out of all those characteristics polled, a socialist candidate was the only one that received majority opposition overall – even considering Democrat’s relative enthusiasm.
Less than half of Americans overall, 45 percent, said they would back a socialist for president, while 53 percent said they would not – suggesting the left-wing shift by the Democratic Party might not be reflected in the electorate as a whole.
NASCAR star Ryan Newman, in a statement released Sunday, acknowledged that he suffered a head injury from crashing on the final lap of the Daytona 500, but looks forward to getting behind the wheel again.
Newman was hospitalized Monday night in what Roush Fenway Racing officials called serious but not life-threatening condition.
He walked out of the Daytona Beach hospital roughly 42 hours after the crash, appearing unscathed.
Roush gave its first detailed account of the ordeal. The crash sent him hard into a wall before he was hit in the driver-side door by another car and became trapped in his upside-down Ford on fire as rescue workers tried to free him.
During a news conference before Sunday’s race, Roush team president Steve Newmark read a statement from Newman, who revealed he had sustained a head injury but no internal injuries.
"I was fortunate to avoid any internal organ damage or broken bones. I did sustain a head injury for which I'm currently being treated," Newman wrote. "The doctors have been pleased with my progression over the last few days."
Colorado prosecutors have obtained a guilty plea in a young woman’s 1980 rape and murder — a cold case they cracked just two months ago through DNA and genetic genealogy.
Truck driver James Curtis Clanton, 62, was in court Friday for a hearing when he agreed to plead guilty to killing 21-year-old Helene Pruszynski in Englewood on Jan. 16, 1980.
“Because of the unrelenting and outstanding efforts of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and United Data Connect, the resolution of a horrible sexual assault and murder in a desolate part of our county four decades ago ended within 15 minutes inside a courtroom this morning,” Douglas County District Attorney George Brauchler said in a news release.
“At his age, if you asked me to guess, I'd say I don't expect him to make parole,” Brauchler said, according to the Highlands Ranch Herald.
Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) campaign responded to criticisms from CNN over its socialist platform late this week by quoting Shakespeare and making a false claim.
Nina Turner, national co-chair of the Sanders campaign, made the remarks during a segment on CNN’s “Newsroom,” which featured fallout from this week’s Democrat debate on NBC.
CNN’s Brooke Baldwin said, “There’s this new ‘Wall Street Journal’/NBC News poll that found that two-thirds of the respondents said that they were actually uncomfortable with a socialist president.”
“But when you break it down – Shakespeare once said, what is in a name? A rose by any other name smells just as sweet,” Turner responded. “What is Democratic socialism? It is government of the people, by the people, and for the people. What does that mean?”
“I am talking about this particular poll,” Baldwin responded. “And I want to – I want an answer on the fact that the majority of America is not comfortable with a socialist president.”
“He is a Democratic socialist,” Turner said, later claiming that “the majority of the American people” support Sanders’ government run health care program and free college.
“Nina, you keep pivoting,” Baldwin pressed. “You got to answer the question.”
“So, for all of the people trying to make hay over the word, Senator Sanders is not talking about socialism in a traditional sense, in terms of what happens in Europe,” Turner falsely claimed. “He never once said that the government should take over the production of all goods and services in this country.”
For starters, Sanders, who is a socialist, has repeatedly tried to brand his socialism as being the same thing that European countries like Denmark, Finland, and Norway, have – which is false. Those countries are capitalist countries that have large social safety nets – also known as big government welfare programs – that hamper economic growth.
Forbes reported:
The myth of Nordic socialism is partially created by a confusion between socialism, meaning government exerting control or ownership of businesses, and the welfare state in the form of government-provided social safety net programs. However, the left’s embrace of socialism is not merely a case of redefining a word. Simply look at the long-running affinity of leftists with socialist dictators in Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela for proof many on the left long for real socialism.
To the extent that the left wants to point to an example of successful socialism, not just generous welfare states, the Nordic countries are actually a poor case to cite. Regardless of the perception, in reality the Nordic countries practice mostly free market economics paired with high taxes exchanged for generous government entitlement programs.
First, it is worth noting that the Nordic counties were economic successes before they built their welfare states. Those productive economies, generating good incomes for their workers, allowed the governments to raise the tax revenue needed to pay for the social benefits. It was not the government benefits that created wealth, but wealth that allowed the luxury of such generous government programs.
Sanders’ claim that he wants to be like those countries is false, which is evidenced by his repeated demonization of capitalism – which leads to the next point: Sanders is a socialist.
Turner’s claim that Sanders has “never once” advocated for the government to take over the production of goods and services in the U.S. is false.
Sanders has repeatedly advocated for nationalization ranging from the 1970s – when he “urged the nationalization of most major industries,” according to CNN – to his current socialist campaign for president, where is he advocating for forcing everyone off of their private health insurance plans and onto a government run health care system, according to The New York Times.
