I'm not just talking about that the colonel was the one who pulled the trigger. The whole movie acted like a domino effect, basically making things lead to another, which in the end resulted that Lester got killed.

I think that that from the very beginning Lester was destined to die. He was a prisoner of the society and the society rejection to him made him die.

Amazon.com owns IMDB. They want to migrate commentary over to product/service reviews only and you can ONLY do that if you purchase products from their site. They're not saying that officially but it is the reason they're doing it.

How do you see
Eyes Wide Shut
was fatalistic or jaded or particularly grim?

The movie cops out in the end with his fatalistic and pessimistic soliloquy about life in general. Quite a few movies in 1999 ended on a similar "life's a bitch then you die" note and while it may seem cute and punctual for its time, it comes across today as jaded with a pinch of amateur secular thought. Those other movies include "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Fight Club"

The point of the film is to suggest that it was not a person, but an environment. The ambiguous trigger pulling, the numerous suspects to kill him all with different motives is meant to say that in reaction to his acting out of place the suburban community as a whole rejected him and he had to die.

Lester. If he had not behaved the way he did, smoking pot with Rickie, having Rickie over to his place, misleading Col Fitts into thinking he was a homosexual then the rest would not have happened and Lester would not have died. At least not the way we witness it in the movie.
