Hanks is great, and while he would have done a good job, it wouldn't hold a candle to Spacey's. Spacey is PERFECT in this role.

It's believable that Benning and Spacey would be married. Even in his menial role , employment-wise, he otherwise has a Clarke Gable-ish old school big head arrogance to him that she would have found appealing.

Yes, I'd bet Hanks would have done well, as would any number of different good actors of the right age range. Each would have played it a bit different and each resultant movie would have been a bit different. But it is what it is, we can never know how it would have been with a different actor, even Hasnks!!
