The birth control thing has been explained already so I'll refrain from repetition but even without birth control there's no guarantees of pregnancy (some couples even have to try for years to produce a child).

Doesn't always work. Sometimes there is still some sperm cells being passed in the precum the penis exudes (designed as a kind of natural lubricant). It only takes one sperm cell (especially the first of your batch) to impregnante a women and the precum alone has been noted as having anywhere from zero to hundreds.

Condoms back then were obviously not latex as we know them today. They used other materials, such as animal skins. They even used certain animal feces as spermicides. Its disgusting to be sure, but its no joke. Do the research. You'll find that such birth control methods existed long before even 1498. It was actually the ancient Egyptions that came up with a lot of this stuff, a couple thousand years ago.
So yeah, birth control is nothing new. I don't think people realize that ancient civilizations were as smart as they were. I mean after all, they did build the great pyramids - a feat which still baffles modern day architects.
