pick up the Japanese Blu-Ray.
I just got a copy of it for $35, hoping it would be a good HD transfer in the original aspect ratio (the German Blu is cropped to 1.78), but it frankly isn't. Either it's just a horribly ancient HD transfer or it's a straight-up SD upscale, but in either case, it looks wretched, and the sound doesn't fare much better.
BUT, it does have the original theatrical version, not the "Special Edition" on the American DVD release. The bartender scene at the beginning doesn't add much, but the fabled "man-animals can't fly" scene is fecking hilarious. There were probably other changes I didn't pick up on, I couldn't be arsed to play both cuts side by side at the same time. I don't know by heart what scenes the SE added.
If you can find the Japanese Blu for any cheaper, get it just for that. Still, anyone who would want a good HD transfer of this movie will have to wait for Warner to crank something out themselves.

The text crawl at the beginning was added for the special edition. That's the one change I do know of.

Didn't realize there was a difference. I saw it in theaters, but can't remember if anything was different from my VHS copy.
