I just saw the first part of the movie while at the bus traveling to Mxico City, unfortunately did not get to see the ending.
However, I watched the part you missed and it seems that he fired her so it will appear that he was going to follow up the guys who were trying to buy him.
As I didnt get to see the ending and guessing that you did, seems that she does not get re-hired, against my hope, so probably my interpretation is not as correct as I think.
