What was so shocking (to me, at least) was the swiftness with which David believed Adam and played the idol on Ken.
Remember that David is a Survivor genius. He was thinking ten steps ahead of everyone. He knew that the other side wanted to get him out, but he knew that they knew he had an idol. So he knew that they'd do a fake-out and vote for Hannah and hope he'd waste his idol on himself.
But, he knew that they would know that he would figure out that they were switching to Hannah, so, when he heard Ken's name whispered, he knew that they were going to triple cross him and vote out Ken instead. But, he was one step ahead and played his idol for Ken.

David knew they knew he had an idol and probably weren't going to vote for him. Adam heard Ken's name whispered and thought they were voting for him so David wanted to protect his closest ally.

I think he sees Ken as his closest friend in the game and couldn't risk it? I wonder if he ever intended to use it on Hannah for him to flip that quickly

Sunday audibly says "Ken" to the others at one point and Adam overheard this. I think since she is sort of the mother-figure there he really believed it and didn't see it as the misdirection it was.

It was the bit about Adam saying he heard them say they voted Ken, I believe. Not sure whether Adam was being truthful, misheard, or simply lied so he could later side with Zeke's crew.

I'm still trying to figure that one out and all I heard was Adam say "I heard Ken's name whispered over here" but I still don't understand because he just doesn't seem that close to Ken as he was to Hannah.
