I mean it looked awkward because it looked like they were trying to look like they were having sex, when you could tell they weren't. It's not a problem I've seen in other movies.

I don't think they were real, you never really see the kind of movement that would indicate actual sex and penetration. For this reason I find they come off kind of awkward, though some people will probably say it's suppose to be.
