<p dir="auto">Do you mean where did he go or how did he afford it?  My guess is that he was making enough money in Seattle to swing a backpack trip across Europe as he had no real ties to the family business.  It seems like a cliche' now, though.</p>

<p dir="auto">There used to be some jobs that enabled you to do a lot of travel on the employer's dime.  For instance, there was a job as an international courier to carry valuable stuff in person to a foreign location.</p>

<p dir="auto">I'd say, with nobody to support and very little expenses, he could swing it on what he was making in Seattle.  There was a tie-in book called Better Living Through Dying and I'm pretty sure it gave the idea he was savvy enough to live cheap via other people.</p>
