if the house was gassed (like the gas chambers in the holocaust and the maid's son) then the son on life support would have lived, correct?
that's a pretty messed up ending.
Or, did the house burn down? That's a less thematically resonant moment methinks.

I hadn't thought of the respirator, but yes, now that you mention it, he would have lived (although I think his room was one of the ones with a towel by the door anyway). Kind of ironic that one of the two who lives is likely to be a vegetable for the rest of his life (according to the father).
