I'm confused people say it's a continuation of the original trigun, but looking at the plot and info about some of the volumes i'm reading names like wolfwood and knvies etc etc.. well I know that SPOILERS wolfwood dies and knives is turned into a tree, so how the hell are they in the maximum manga? This must be a remake of sorts.

The original manga starts off with Trigun, and then it was moved to a magazine with a more mature audience in mind and re-named Trigun Maximum, which ended in 2008. Obviously, the anime wasn't made in 2008, so they had to do their own ending for that, which is why characters that die in the show remain in the manga. The anime and manga have similar elements, but are separate stories.
