The ending I would have liked to seen was KC-Joe coming back home with the baby and seeing the faces of all who did not believe him about his wife trying to contact him from the dead, to me this would have been the ultimate ending since throughout the whole movie no one believed him and thought he was going crazy.
I would have loved to have seen that scene too.

Hi I also cryed as soon as i saw the baby/it was just so unexspected..but cryed with joy..and said ahhh how suprising ..as he never exspected that neither. The film should of ended just there realy. A beauiful Filmhard to say aswell in regards of the theory of peoples believing in the otherside..reality & death. Faith is a strong feeling .you either beleieve or you don'twith me..i am at the cross roads..who does beleive. But confused i guessthe film portrays alot of this..with his feelow peers at work & hiself.. Have to watch again interesting film.was different/story being told through the spirit of a beloved realy..and finding answers :))

Here, here! She gave up her strength so the baby could live then she led him to the baby in which her spirit is the only surviving part of her. Thats the aesthetics of it all.

She survived the crash and was dying when the tribe people found her. They saved her baby but couldn't save her, so it was her daughter. Where else could they have gotten the baby?

Interesting theory. I think it more of simply a metaphor for new life as the 'Tribeswowman'says "we couldn't save her body but we saved her soul."

The mom couldnt' come back with Joe because she was dead. It wouldn't make any sense for her to be found alive, although I was hoping until I saw the baby then promptly cried.

Not a terribly satisfying movie, but the ending is pretty straightforward. Costner is led by his wife's spirit to her baby, and we see them playing together back home some years later. We know whose baby it is, as she looks uncannily like her mother.

Emily was pregnant when she went to South America( I forget which country she was in). She survived the bus crash, but was dying when the tribe pulled her out of the water. The tribe was able to save her baby, but couldn't save her. Then the very ending maybe a couple of years later. Joe and his daughter are playing together and we see that she looks like her mother. I hoped this helped.
