It's been a while since I've seen this and I don't clearly recall why Joe couldn't or wouldn't go with Emily to South America.
I'm not judging Joe. But if that was me and it was obvious I wasn't going to be able to talk my pregnant wife out of going somewhere potentially dangerous, I would have at least tried to go with her so I could be there for her and the baby. You've got to sacrifice for the ones you love if you truly love them, right?
Anyone else agree/disagree? Is there something I'm not remembering about why he didn't go with her?

Well I'm assuming the obvious reason why. He was a doctor that works full time, most doctors can't get time of like that and I don't think she would have wanted him to leave his job. She wasn't going to be gone forever so of course he is going to hope everything will be okay.
