I have just watched the last 3/4 of this film on TCM whilst on holiday from the UK in Jerez, wanted to go to sleep but couldnt switch it off!
A great film
I think the strength of this film is the "characterisation of personalities", in life there are winners and losers, they may not be easy to spot. Steve Valdez is a winner in this film, he has a supportive partner, their relationship is strong and they have absolute trust. The Valdezs are no financially well off, their house is untidy however they possess ultimate riches. Jane and Patrick are the losers, as obviously is Valerie as she dies, however it appears that the first 2 of these characters demonstrated an egocentricity in regard to their relationships that ultimately resulted in their enduring unhappiness. Janes character in my humble opinion is the most sinister, she is devious, self centred and controlling well illustrated in her interaction with the Valdezs, she makes a play for steve and then tidies the flat, a nice thing to do or is she competing with Lisa. Patricks character is immature, selfish and ultimately self destructive, his characterisation could be perceived as homophobic, but I feel he played a character that was very threatening to an insecure woman.
In all 1 of the best films I have seen in months, possibly years an 8.5 out of 10

Yeah, I'm guessing you failed to notice that the credits listed them in order of appearance. Believe it or not, a textbook on Australian film in my university library made the exact same mistake.

Also patrick is the gay patient having the affair with the married man, how can he be homophobic? Valerie's husband is John I believe.

Apologies, it was difficult to establish who was who, I saw most of the film and couldn't make sense of the credits. Looking back to my review Lisa should be replaced by Paula.
