The voices on the tapes were SUPERB! It sounded so creepy, and added depth to the film. Other than that, I was kind of let down by this film. It seems to me that the majority of those who like this film are a morelet me say, sensitive crowd. It really wasn't scary at all, it had the look of a made-for-TV movie, and David Caruso is laughable in anything other than CSI: Whatever.(The scene after they find Hank in the stairwell, and the camera does a zoom-in on Phil, and he says beep you" to Gordon is HILARIOUS!) I didn't hate it, but with the decent hype on IMDb, I was a little let down. But hey, I don't regret watching it! I love watching horror films!

I have to agree with you because I havent seen this movie in 9-10 years, but I still remember how it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neckThis movie didnt have horrifying scenes of violence, but it was very supernaturally creepy.
As it stands, this is one of my favorite horror/thriller movies of all time

One of best movies made was The Shining. It was a movie with no blood and gore. Not a slasher movie, by any stretch of the imagination. But it was a psychological thriller that didn't allow you to put your guard down for a minute. To be honest, movies like Hostel, or Saw, don't scare me. It's just blood, and gore. Fun to watch, but not scary. You're just glad Jason doesn't live in your neighborhood. It's movies that build with tension, and surprise you, that really stick with you when you go to bed that night.

You'll be beside yourself when you realize I rated it a rare 10/10. I feel it is one of the greatest horror films ever created.
I agree with you (though I rated it 9). I've seen thousands of horror films and this is one of my favorites. It's probably my favorite horror from 2000 on up actually.
Everyone gets creeped by different things, and the atmosphere did it for me in this one. I felt Brad Anderson effectively told this story well, and the scene with Hank finding the treasures, and the kid who's scared of the dark walking in the tunnels when the lights go out, very scary scenes. But, not everyone feels that way.
Agree with this, too. Not every film works for every viewer and everyone is scared / creeped out by different things. Some just can't get that feeling from
any
film. Just depends on the person. People keep raving about The Conjuring and
that
movie did absolutely nothing for me. This one however creeps me out every time I watch it.

agree.. this film was dull.. the only thing mildly interesting about it was the voices I feel totally let-down.. the scary scenes.. oh what am i kidding there were no scary scenes.. I grew up watching what i would call Action horror movies.. where people get chopped up or atleast suffer some disfigurment or injury that adds plot to the story.
in the future there should be some way to warn you this movie can bore you to death.. its the exact same kinda boring stuff like Grave Encounters was.

But it did. Gordon was acting out exactly what Mary did. Understanding the truth of what Mary did, was the key in knowing what Gordon did.

The different voices on the tape was by far the scariest thing in the film. The film should have revolved more around that psychotic patient.

I agree with the voice acting for Mary, Billy, and Simon being the best part of the movie. Though Gordon was superb. And I never thought the movie was particularly scary, but it was very thought-provoving, as evidenced by all these threads. Any movie that makes me want to discuss it and watch it again for specific reasons already makes it better than most.
Is it a great movie? No. Is it well-acted? In parts, yes. Was it worth watching? Definitely.

Then you clearly did not pay attention to the movie. Gordon KILLED HIS WIFE and CHILD the day he got the contract (the Friday). They started the job on Monday (3 days later), at which point, the murder had already taken place. This was not only hinted at, but made loud and clear. You MISSED the plot.

We know exactly when the incident at Gordy's house occurred. It was the Friday after he got the job, before the job started. But AFTER he was touring the asylum, and heard Simon (Mary's demon) speaking to him.
So it all adds up, even if his troubles made him more susceptible to possession.
(As would Mary's troubled nature.)
I can understand someone not liking this, but it all added up pretty well.

Just wanted to throw out the film "Mad dog and Glory" as David Caruso's only watchable performance.
As far as this film goes, I personally thought it was very poorly done. I caught no context as to when the incident happened at Gordys house. It could very well have been before the job started, which would have nothing to do with the demon that was inside Mary. Gordy was already under a lot of pressure due to the potential loss of his business, which makes it more likely that he just snapped on his own, having nothing to do with Mary's demon.
Also, if Mary was possessed, why would she need to be experiencing dissociative identity disorder? I've never seen a connection between the two conditions in fact or fiction.
I don't knock anybody for liking it, but for it just didn't work at all. And for the record, I hate you, David Caruso.

That's a fair statement. "Session 9" is a very different type of scary than what "Hostel" or something of that ilk offers. I don't think "sensitive" is the right word, but I certainly see what you're going for.
Some people find thought-provoking tension better than gore; others see it the other way. We've all got opinions!

I don't think it's ignorant. It may have come off a little arrogant, however. I don't think you are taking the meaning of what I meant correctly. (Which, this whole debate is actually quite silly, since it was such a small and insignificant part of my critique, but I shall address it since that's what you took issue with.)
And I'm slightly let down by your general internet experience if you really thought you'd "heard it all until that comment." Geeze, I didn't even say I hated it. I just had some criticisms. Go back to looking at pictures of cats.
