I just heard a rumor that J.J. Abrams and a few other of the creative minds of the TV Series "Lost" are huge Stephen King and Dark Tower fans. Apparently, they are trying to get the rights and everything so they can try to make this happen. I also heard that Stephen King would like to see them adapted to a screen as well
I for one am very happy. JJ is a great director and if anyone is going to direct these movies, it needs to be a fan.

I'm not sure but it might now be mentioned on IMDb Pro. Is there someone out there that can verify or deny that?
In any case I always said the DT series, if done right, would rival LotR-and in my personal opinion, blows it away story and fantasy wise. Now that it looks like it's a go, I'm a little hesitant. I really really like the old adaptations like Carrie, Firestarter, Christine, Cujo, The Shining (
hated
the redone Shining), Misery, The Stand and some of his less fantastical stuff like Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile, but there have been others that have really put a damper on transfering book-to-screen, like Rose Madder, The Tommyknockers, Storm of the Century, and others I wanted so badly to forget about that I apparently actually did.
As for the people to cast, I agree Clint would have been
perfect
for Roland, but some of these other names, I dunno. NOT Russel Crow. And although I really like DDL in the few movies I've seen him in, does he have the weathered yet timeless face to pull off a Roland that SK set him up to be? This is a thinker for me. I will say though that at this point in time the idea of putting Ryan Reynolds in this movie at all is completely and absolutely preposterous. I was forced to watch Waiting but managed to elude watching any of his stupid college-based movies, although I've seen parts of them. I simply cannot see him in any SK role in any book, ever. Does everyone else know something I don't? A role maybe where he played someone serious and impressed so many people here? Please, enlighten me. I honestly don't know where everyone's pulling Ryan Reynolds from. I remember a mention of Jim Carrey, and a few years ago I'd have said the same thing about him but since catching him in movies like 23 and some others, I'd have to say he could pull something off in the movie.
I'd
love
to see Ron Pearlman somewhere in there, as well as David Carradine or Jeremy Irons. All of the men in the movie have to be able to carry off a worn-down look considering the setting of the story, so no pretty boys like Johnny Depp. And I think Jada Pinkett Smith would be perfect for Susannah.
sometimes what you learn gets in the way of what you know

Good call man! I mean, he was basically that with a scottish accent in braveheart "Well, thats something we'll have to remedy", and who can forget "I'm yer uncle, Arrrrgyle". Man, the most memorable part of the movie for me was his 5 minutes.
Young Roland: Joseph Gordon Levitt
Eddie: Jason Lee or Joseph Gordon Levitt
Jake: New young talent, but if it was going to be made tomorrow; the kid from Finding Neverland who played Peter.
Suzannah: Rosario Dawson
Father Callahan: David Caradeen
Randal Flagg/Walter O'Dim/The Man In Black: Gary Oldman, no ifs or ands about it.
Cort: Brian Cox, I can just picture him yelling and slapping a bunch of kids around and it being great.

Somebody mentioned Sean Bean as Roland. If he lost some weight, he'd be dead on I think. You need a weathered face and his eyes can pull off the intense Mifune-inspired look Clint had way back (and still really has). Gotta remember, Roland ages a lot throughout. Runner up would be Viggo Mortensen, but please not Butler or Jackman. Cort, Ron Pearlman was a great idea, but he's a pretty tall guy (doesn't mean much on film really). Need somebody short, stocky, and mean as hell. But 2 out of 3 isn't bad.

I've just finished reading the series and the last of the comic books and what a story! I get into reading modes here and there, but must admit I'm not a big reader. But since starting The Gunslinger I feel like Ka has been forcing me to read the rest.
They are apparently starting to add to the comic book series in Feb 08. I believe they are trying to fill in the holes of Jericho Hill and such. Otherwise, the current comic books are mostly what we already know from Wizard and Glass plus great artwork. They also had background to many things like the 13 Wizard Glass globes and where Jonas and Rhea of Coos comes from.
It's too bad Clint Eastwood isn't the age that he was in Fistful of Dollars because he would be the perfect Roland. Afterall, that's the character that started off the whole story, so he definitely would have to be involved in some way.
I don't have any original ideas on the best characters but Russell Crowe is a bad idea for Roland. He'd be better as one of the bad characters.
How about Keira Knightly (sp?) for Susan? She's a babe with a cute face, and not fake Hollywood body.
Jason Lee, Ryan Reynolds sound good for Eddie.
Roland is a tough pick but Daniel Day Lewis would probably be a good pick.
I see the problems with a film version, but I really would like to see this series on the big screen. Some of the books could even be split up and it could be more than 4 movies as someone suggested, but I don't know how to deal with Jake? HBO series would be the second best, but the better not make it an ABC miniseries because it would suck without the adult wording and images that makes it so good and honest.

Christian Bale is good choice but is too young imo.
At the moment he's too young. You're so right. But I want everyone on this forum to realize this: This movie/tv/mini series will take 7-14 years to finish. Look at Harry Potter! A movie a year and still going. And the point is: the actors will age 7-14 years!
-Viggo Mortensen 52 years. He is Our world's Roland judging by appearance. This guy would be the best choice.
-Daniel Day-Lewis is 53 years.
-Russel Crowe is 46 years. (I don't see him as Roland)
-Guy Pearce 43 years.
-Cliwe Owen 46 years.
Consider the age thing. The movie production probably starts in 2011 and they start shooting 2012, and it takes probably 1,5 year per movie. The actors will age fast. Jake is a problem but Roland is too, he can't be too old. We don't wanna see him as 65 years in movie #7. The Roland in the books is able to run for ages with Susannah on his back. We can't have a grandpa to act that.
Think of guys in suitable ages. Like Christian Bale, 36 years.

roland- Nathan Fillon(serenity) Viggo Mortenson would also be reall great
Hugh Jackman would also be a great choice Matthew Fox (jack, lost) would be great for the dramatic side of Roland but idk i really dont like the fact of him being an action packed hero gunning down ppl although he could pass with the looks (kinda)
Man in black- Micheal Emerson (Ben,Lost) would be soooo fantastic with this role he is both dark and twisted he even knows how to look absoulutely dark i can see him with a black hood on with his evil smile and act the way like he has everything under controlWilliam dafoe would be really great (spiderman, green goblin and boondock saints, detective dude)
Eddie Dean- Josh Holloway (Sawyer,Lost) would do really great with this character just hed need to keep his cocky all around attituide like we saw in lost the tough guy thing
the chef guy who gets hung- Brendan Gleeson (Frank,28 days later and Mad eyed moody off harry potter) he would fit the facial scenario and hes just mysterious and age apropiate.
Cort- they have to be careful with this character although he is used very little he has a very huge impact on the story with him revolving around rolands mind and stuff - Terry oquin(locke lost)i kno wat ur going to think not another lost character but these are the actors jj works with the best u kno i at least wanto see one make the movie in particulary josh holloway hes a great actor and my fav character in lost, but terry would do good wit cortIan Mckellen (magneto, x men and lord of rings gandalf) he fits the age even though a little older but wasnt cort old but powerful thats the impact ian put in both x men and lord of the rings he would do a great job wit this character

Also, wanted to add, Susanna: first last and only woman to pull it offVivica A. Fox. Anybody could fall in love with her. Breath-taking in fact. And, did you see her on Curb Your Enthusiasm? Hysterical, great timing, and a professional. This can't be over acted, otherwise it's going come off feeling like cardboard, no natter how flashy the paint job.
The most King Movies that worked were non-fantastic. Shawshank, Misery, Stand By Me, Green Mile. Hell I even like Running Man and Dolores Claborne. There's always The Shining and Carrie. But has he had any series that have been worth the emotional and narrative roller-coaster that the original book instilled in its readers? I never saw Kingdom Hospital (but that really wasn't his idea to begin with) so I can't compare it. But I forced myself to watch The Stand, Langoliers, and Tommy knockers. P.U. Also, never watched more than first 10 min. of Rose Red. Any good?
Did anyone catch the Nightmares and Dreamscapes TNT miniseries? Pretty good as vignettes, really very good. cinematography was rich and shadowy, and the stories were more an extension of the original tales, and believably acted.
OK good for now.

You can't forget that Roland, although ageless and somehow out of the framework of time, IS old. Also, he is a king. He has to be able to ascend to that stature and command in several key points in the films.
Now give it a chance to sink in
Pierce Brosnan. Frightening blue eyes, lanky, could very easily get dirty and swing a fast hammer. Little grey around the gills too.,
And after seeing Ironman last night, if he lost a little weight, and he's not averse to gaining and losing weight for films, Jeff Bridges. Same cold blue eyes, and you could see him pulling off royal voice and command.
Plus he's such a legitimate actor, he would bring incredible authenticity to the story, which is the only thing that's going to make this a success.

Edward Norton would be perfect for Eddie, but what about Jake Gyllenhaal?? I think he could really pull it off. Maby even Shia Labeouf??? i might be going off on a limb there, but who knows?
for Roland how about Keanu Reaves LMAO JUST KIDDING!!!! but for real, yea i can see Gerard Butler making a good Roland
now ive read the series awhile ago, and this may not seem like a good choice, but for the walter/flagg/etc what about Johnny Depp?

I've been reading it over and over again, and I just have to say it: As good as Edward Norton would be for Eddie (and he would be great) he is just too old for the part. Eddie is supposed to be in his twenties, and Edward Norton is going to be at least 40 by the time any Dark Tower movie/series gets into production. Personally, I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be really good in the part.
