For the new season in contrast to how he was in prior seasons? It's like how the Joker was in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, or Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Meaning Aku is more augmented and plays around less for the new season.

I think so, though I hope he's still a gloriously hammy wisecracker to some extent, as that element was what stopped him from being a generic evil overlord and gave him his charm.

If you consider that Aku has kept Jack exiled in the future for fifty years and hasn't been yet defeated by Jack within that timeframe, Aku must be darker and more evil to be that tough and strong to outlast against Jack while foiling his attempts of returning home.
