I just watched it in French, though I caught a few lines of Japanese thrown in there too. I quite enjoyed this movie, but I didn't have to put up with bad dubbing

Why is it so surprising that people who are ethnic Japanese are speaking French? They speak English and many other languages other than Japanese, depending on which country they reside in.

The movie's original language is indeed French (and for that matter, Nadir doesn't sound any less anoying in it). The Japanese parts are faithfully timed: only when conversing with Marco or Nadir, Akemi or her father speak French. None of the other Japanese characters do so, hence they only have Japanese lines It's a small treat: seldom have i seen a correct use of a language mix since Patton.

Sorry about the late responseI saw it 2 days ago and the description on my interactive cable guide said "French, subtitled in English". My digital cable guide is correct most of the time. Hope that helps.

I can't be positive, but I'm pretty sure the original language was French with some Japanese spoken during the scenes in Japan.
(I'd assume many of the Japanese actors spoke French even while in Japan, possibly to make the film easier to understand for its French audience.)
I saw the English dubbed version myself, but because Marco said "I'm.. tomodachi.." and other Japanese words when speaking to the detective 'tomodachi' means friend in Japanese and the script of 'Tokyo' at the very end wasn't subtitled, I'd think bits of Japanese were spoken in the original film to give it a more exotic, foreign feel.
